Sauces

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

A sauce is liquid, creaming or semi-solid food served on or used in preparing other foods. Sauces are not normally consumed by themselves; they add flavor, moisture, and visual appeal to another dish. Sauces need a liquid component, but some sauces (for example, pico de gallo salsa or chutney) may contain more solid elements than liquid. Sauces are an essential element in cuisines all over the world and can be served cold (ex.cocktail sauce), lukewarm (ex.pesto), cooked (ex.bechamel), or can be served hot or cold (ex.apple sauce).

Some sauces are based on vegetables (ex. ketchup) or fruits (ex. cranberry sauce), while other are based on entirely different types of ingredients, such as eggs (ex.mayonnaise), cream (ex.alfredo sauce), spices (ex.mustard), sugar (ex.carmel sauce), etc.
