Question: Do you know why this pear tree is allowed to grow 2-3 times larger than any other pear tree in the orchard?
Answer: It is a pollenizer.

Some fruit trees are capable of self pollenization, but many are not. In an orchard, a pollenizer is a tree that typically produces little or no fruit of commerical value but can provide abundant, compatible, and viable pollen at the same flowering time as the pollenized trees. For example, Bartlett pears are good pollenizers for all Asian pear varieties and are often used in orchards for that purpose. Also, many varieties of fruit trees which can self-pollenate
(like Bartlett pears) will typically produce bigger, more abundant crops if cross pollenated by another variety.
