Hot Portugal Pepper (Capsicum annuum) are an average of 6-7" long and about 1 1/2" at the shoulder tapering to a point. The peppers start off green and then change into a glossy lipstick red, although a rare few may turn yellow and then red. Hot Portugal Peppers have a heat index at maturity of 5,000 to 30,000 Scoville Heat Units (by comparison, Jalapeno Peppers are 2,500-10,000 SHU).
